Waveny LifeCare Network Invests in Nursing Education to Build Tomorrow’s Workforce

Waveny LifeCare Network is proud to participate in an ambitious and compassionate initiative aimed at transforming the healthcare workforce by advancing Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) into Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). As a key partner in a two-day Design Sprint held at the New Canaan Library, Waveny joined forces with CT State Norwalk, Open Doors, and Career Resources, Inc. to develop an innovative, community-based pathway for professional growth in nursing.

This initiative is the result of a 10-month collaboration funded by the Centering Workers in Job Design grant and built on Human-Centered Design principles. Together, this unique coalition is launching a pilot program, set to begin later this year, that will provide working CNAs with structured opportunities to earn LPN credentials and elevate their nursing careers.

Waveny’s leadership in this effort builds on its successful Kathleen M. Fruin, RN Nursing School, which provides free tuition, career mentorship, and immediate job placement. By integrating this new pathway, Waveny is creating a powerful opportunity for caregivers from the moment they enter the healthcare field through their continued professional development. “This initiative is not just about training more nurses,” said Russell R. Barksdale, Jr., President & CEO of Waveny LifeCare Network. “It’s about investing in the people who provide compassionate healthcare every day. By helping students take the next step in their journey, we’re addressing the nursing shortage at its roots and building a stronger, more resilient system of care.”

The program is a model of cross-sector collaboration and a testament to Waveny’s unwavering commitment to people—whether it’s the patients and families they serve or the dedicated professionals who care for them.
