New Canaan – Following the success of the past two years’ events, Waveny Care Network recently held its third annual mixed-paddle tournament fundraiser. Doubling in size since the event’s inception, this year’s event featured 32 teams and 64 players playing at four site locations. All monies were raised in support of Waveny’s not-for-profit network of residences, programs and services.

“We are absolutely delighted that this event has captured public interest and expanded exponentially this year,” said Sharon Stevenson, Waveny Development Committee member and Paddle Event co-chair. “Much like Waveny, the sport is a distinctive and defining part of our community.”

“With the notable increase in excitement, support and success this event has generated, I believe we’ve cemented our mixed Paddle event as an annual fundraiser for Waveny and the community,” said Alice Parker, Waveny Development Committee member and Paddle Event co-chair. “This event’s continued growth and success is due in large part to the efforts made in securing our paddle sites, player participants, sponsors, prizes, food and beverages, and above all, helped to make sure the evening was enjoyable for everyone involved.”

The tournament, which included two sets of “A” and “B Flight” rounds, was held concurrently at four event sites: the Country Club of New Canaan, Field Club of New Canaan, Wee Burn Country Club and Waveny Park. Event sponsors, Bob’s Sports of New Canaan, Earth Garden of Wilton, Diamond Deli of Norwalk, Karl Chevrolet of New Canaan, Walter Stewart’s Market, and Stewart’s Spirits of New Canaan, provided food and beverages, prizes, and paddle balls for the 32 participating teams.  Event finals were held at the Country Club of New Canaan and featured an after-party celebration inside to the club’s paddle hut.

Two sets of “Flight A” winners were Junius Clark and Tina Lum with runners up Scott Fuller and Meg Brossy; and Gitte and Christian Toft-Nielsen with runners up Susan and Gary Squires. Two sets of “Flight B” winners were Christina Hare and George Mandler with runners up Alice Parker and Jon Rockman; and Valerie and Michael Frost with runners up Tom Ayoub and Ann McManus.

Plans for next year’s fourth annual event are already being discussed. Waveny encourages all paddle players with an interest in giving back to the community to join its event planning committee. For more information, contact Joanne Boyer at 203.594.5416 or [email protected]
