"Paddle for a Purpose:" Waveny Care Network's Fourth Annual Mixed-Paddle Event Heightens Awareness
Posted on March 7, 2012
New Canaan – Following the success of the past three years’ events, Waveny Care Network recently held its fourth annual mixed-paddle tournament fundraiser. Doubling in size since the event’s inception, this year’s event featured 32 teams and 64 players playing at four site locations. All monies were raised in support of Waveny’s not-for-profit network of residences, programs and services.
“We are absolutely delighted that this event has captured public interest and expanded exponentially over the past four years,” said Sharon Stevenson, Waveny Board Member and Paddle Event co-chair. “This year we were able to attract local recreational players as well as top ranked APTA professionals all coming together to 'Paddle for a Purpose'!”
“The event generated a notable increase in awareness, enthusiasm, and support and is already on the players’ calendars for next year” said Alice Parker, Waveny Development Committee member and Paddle Event co-chair. “The tournament’s continued success is due in large part to the local clubs donating their courts and paddle huts for the evening, player participants, wonderful sponsors, prizes, food and beverages, and volunteers, who all helped to make sure the evening was enjoyable for everyone involved.”
The tournament was held concurrently at four event sites: the Country Club of New Canaan, Field Club of New Canaan, The Lake Club and Waveny Park. Event sponsors, ONS (Orthopaedic & Neurosurgery Specialists), Bob’s Sports of New Canaan, Earth Garden of Wilton, Diamond Deli of Norwalk, Karl Chevrolet in New Canaan, New Canaan Ski & Sport, Garelick & Herbs of New Canaan, Walter Stewart’s Market, and Stewart’s Spirits of New Canaan, provided food and beverages, prizes, and paddle balls for the 32 participating teams. Event finals were held at the Country Club of New Canaan and featured an after-party celebration inside the club’s paddle hut.
Winners from the other site locations include Dave and Sheila Mueller with runners up Dan and Sarah Kunetz; winners Lynn Hose and Joel Miller with runners up Gitte and Christian Toft-Nielsen; winners Cyrus Clark and Ann Depuy with runners up Alice Parker and Jon Rockman.
Plans for next year’s fifth annual event are already being discussed. Waveny encourages all paddle players with an interest in giving back to the community to join its event planning committee. For more information, contact Joanne Boyer at 203.594.5416 or [email protected]
