The “Crown Jewels” trio recently performed for patients and residents at Waveny Care Center.

The “Crown Jewels” trio recently entertained Waveny Care Center’s residents with a musical performance of classics. Featuring Charles Crown on piano, Wally Mead on saxophone and Cindy Hurvitz on drums, the trio played “old standard songs” by composers including Irving Berlin and George M. Cohan.

After practicing medicine in New Canaan for over 50 years, Dr. Charles Crown now focuses his energies as a pianist alongside Mead and Hurvitz.

Former conductor of the New Canaan Town Band for more than seven years, Wally Mead started playing saxophone professionally when he was in high school and now composes arrangements for concert bands, local “big bands,” as well as for a saxophone quintet he started in 2005.

Member of the New Canaan Town Band and Darien Community Band, Cindy Hurvitz performs on drums in addition to playing the clarinet.

“One reason the Crown Jewels get such an enthusiastic response is that we seem to have so much fun playing together,” said Wally Mead. The trio also performs at New Canaan Inn on the first Thursday of every month.

Waveny Care Network provides a comprehensive continuum of care – now including skilled Home Healthcare –  to serve the growing needs of older adults from all areas. Waveny is a not-for-profit organization that offers independent living at New Canaan Inn, assisted living for people with Alzheimer’s and memory loss at The Village, and skilled nursing at Waveny Care Center. It also includes the Brown Geriatric Evaluation Clinic, a Geriatric Care Management team that provides 24-hour coverage, an Adult Day Program that offers flexible hours and transportation six days a week, inpatient and outpatient Rehabilitation Services, and respite programs at both The Village and Care Center.
