Waveny Care Network recently celebrated National Assisted Living Week and National Adult Day Services Week with a combined event held on “Main Street” at The Village at Waveny Care Center. Joined by friends and family, residents of The Village and participants in Waveny’s Adult Day Program enjoyed an afternoon filled with music, refreshments and entertainment.
The celebration commenced with congratulatory words from a number of Waveny staff members including Elyse Dent, campus administrator, Ilene Sumberg, director of the Adult Day Program, and Michael Bird, CFO and interim CEO, as well as a special proclamation reading by New Canaan selectman, Beth Jones who declared the week to be “National Assisted Living and Adult Day Services Week” within the Town of New Canaan.
“Whereas, the need for services has increased in recent years as a growing number of caregivers have sought services for loved ones in order to maintain quality of life for all involved,” said Ms. Jones, “and whereas, Adult Day Services and Assisted Living residences provide much-needed respite to families caring for adults who require personal assistance with activities of daily life, medical monitoring, and/or more social interaction, therefore, do I proclaim this week to be National Assisted Living Week and National Adult Day Services Week within the town of New Canaan. We are proud to recognize Waveny’s dedication to serving the growing needs of older adults from all areas, and commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality of life for all residents, patients and participants within its comprehensive continuum of care.”
“This special celebration reflects the friendships and experiences shared between The Village’s assisted living residents and the adult day participants,” said Ilene Sumberg. "It seems only natural that Waveny would celebrate the two weeks together.”
September was officially designated as the month to nationally recognize supportive services dedicated to senior citizens in 1983, when President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the third week of the month as National Adult Day Services Week. National Assisted Living Week was later established in 1995 and begins on the first Sunday after Labor Day.
“Our combined celebration of National Assisted Living Week and National Adult Day Services Week gives us a special opportunity to honor our friends and families,” said Elyse Dent. “It also gives us the chance to thank each member of our talented staff for their commitment to providing superior care to our residents at The Village and to our adult day participants. I also want to thank our Waveny families for entrusting us with the care of their loved ones, and for honoring us with the opportunity to play such an important role in their lives.”
“We are so lucky to have this amazing space called ‘Main Street’ here at The Village,” added Dent. “It gives us a place to come together, and the opportunity to get to know each other better each and every day. It reflects our mission to foster an environment of dignity, compassion and personal fulfillment for all whom we serve.”
