Waveny’s new geriatric assessment team, Andrea Schaffner, MD; Maryanne Farina, PA; and Mercedes Papaharis, APRN (L-R), will lead the Brown Geriatric Evaluation Clinic at Waveny Care Center and provide comprehensive medical assessments on-site Uusing an interdisciplinary team approach.

New Canaan – Heather Neff, Chief Executive Officer of Waveny Care Network, recently announced geriatrician Andrea Schaffner, MD; Mercedes Papaharis, APRN; and Maryanne Farina, PA, as Waveny’s new clinical team responsible for heading the Drs. Charlotte and David Brown Geriatric Evaluation Clinic at Waveny Care Center and conducting geriatric assessments and ongoing management on-site.

The Drs. Charlotte & David Brown Geriatric Evaluation Clinic at Waveny Care Center was established in 1998 to address common – but often complex – medical issues in older adults, especially memory loss, and welcomes older adults from all communities.

Through the Clinic, Dr. Schaffner, Ms. Papaharis and Ms. Farina will provide comprehensive medical assessments Uusing an interdisciplinary team approach to review each patient’s cognitive, psychological, social, medical, functional and caregiver status.  Following a geriatric evaluation, their professional recommendations coupled with the development of an individualized care plan can assist patients and their families in making appropriate short- and long-term healthcare decisions that may help improve personal function and manage geriatric conditions that can interfere with quality of life.

“I am extremely pleased to have our new team on board and regularly seeing patients,” said Ms. Neff. “The wealth of clinical expertise that the members of our new geriatric assessment team bring to Waveny, both individually and collectively, will be a tremendous asset to our organization. I am confident in their ability to lead the Brown Geriatric Evaluation Clinic into the future, and proud to offer their services to older adults from all areas, through the Clinic.”

A board-certified geriatrician with more than 25 years of experience in geriatrics, Dr. Schaffner was responsible for establishing Yale New Haven Hospital’s geriatric assessment clinic in 1981 and championing its subsequent success.  She has since served as Medical Director for several prominent Connecticut eldercare facilities and has been an active member of geriatric-focused organizations including the American Geriatrics Society, American Medical Directors Association, as well as the State Medical Society and Geriatric Committee.

Dr. Shaffner received her undergraduate degree from Barnard College and earned her doctorate in medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.  She completed both her internship and residency at Yale New Haven Hospital, where she presently serves as Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine.

Licensed Nurse Practitioner and New Canaan resident, Mercedes Papaharis, has served upon Waveny’s Medical Staff since 2001, having previously performed geriatric assessments at the Brown Geriatric Evaluation Clinic. She also practices with Soundview Medical Associates of Norwalk, Connecticut.

Ms. Papaharis completed her undergraduate work at Hunter College in New York and holds two master’s degrees in the fields of Community Health Education and Nursing from Hunter College and Fairfield University, respectively.

Licensed Physician Assistant Maryanne Farina, like Ms Papaharis, also practices with Soundview Medical Associates. Ms. Farina completed both her undergraduate and graduate work at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

“Not only will our new team’s professional ability to evaluate and provide for the long-term management of patients with progressive memory impairment and dementia benefit the surrounding communities,” said Neff, “but it will also greatly benefit our residents and their families at The Village, Waveny’s assisted living facility for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of memory loss,” said Neff. “Working in conjunction with our highly skilled Geriatric Care Management team and other programs available at Waveny, our new team at the Clinic looks forward to continuing to address eldercare needs throughout Fairfield County and neighboring Westchester towns.”

“The practice of Geriatrics is truly a ‘family affair’,” said Dr. Schaffner. “Which is why it has been such a pleasure practicing within this community at Waveny. Families of our new and existing patients are enthusiastic about collaborating with us pre-and post-assessment, which greatly contributes to the effectiveness and implementation of the evaluation and management process. This level of involvement is terrific and beneficial to all.”

“I look forward to serving and treating existing and new patients at the Clinic as well as working with patients and residents throughout Waveny’s comprehensive continuum of programs, services and residences,” said Dr. Schaffner.
