Waveny Care Center offers comprehensive healthcare services to older adults and others affected by illness or injury. Waveny encourages and assists individuals to live with dignity and as independently as circumstances permit. The Care Center is among an elite nationwide group of long-term care facilities that have earned accreditation from the prestigious Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, whose standards exceed federal and State requirements. History

Conceived and planned out of concern for the quality of life for its neighbors, the Care Center was built entirely with contributions from the New Canaan community. It is incorporated as a not-for-profit charitable organization and is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.

Admission to Waveny

Admission to the Care Center's facilities or programs is by physician referral and the approval of the Admissions Committee. Admission is open to anyone 16 years of age or older. While New Canaan residents are accorded first consideration, applicants from any geographic location are encouraged to apply and are admitted in the order of applications received.

The Care Center participates in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Clients who cannot afford to pay the full cost of their care may be eligible to receive financial assistance.

Respite Care

For families who need short-term assistance from their full-time caregiving responsibilities, our respite program is available for stays lasting from one week to one month for older adults who have advanced memory loss or other chronic health conditions.

Our highly qualified staff understands that some individuals may only need assistance with activities of daily living, while others may require 24-hour monitoring and supervision. Let us give you peace of mind while you take some necessary time for yourself.

Reservations for the respite program must be made in advance and are scheduled pending bed availability. Payment for this service is by private pay, long-term care insurance or State funds.

Long-Term Care

For patients who require ongoing care from our team of medical professionals, our highly acclaimed skilled nursing facility provides excellent long-term care. We are also proud to offer a specialized unit dedicated to the long-term care and security of individuals with memory loss.

Additionally, for those who are terminally ill, we provide compassionate care in a dignified and tranquil setting that is not only sensitive to the patient's needs, but to his or her family's.

Each resident immediately benefits from our comprehensive approach to care and our multidisciplinary team, which includes our Medical Director, nurses, therapists, dietician, social worker and numerous support personnel.

Therapeutic Recreation

To help maintain and enhance the quality of life for our residents, we offer a well-rounded recreation program that is led by a certified therapeutic recreation therapist. Activities are designed to acquire new leisure skills, rehabilitate functional abilities and to enhance physical and mental health. Development of personal interests is also encouraged to stimulate participation and promote independence.

Short-Term Rehabilitation

At Waveny Care Center, we value and understand the importance of rehabilitative care and offer a continuum of services to help patients achieve their most successful outcomes.

For your convenience, we offer the opportunity to prearrange short-term post-operative inpatient stays in advance of scheduled joint-replacement procedures. In addition to our core physical, occupational and speech therapies, we provide therapeutic massage, nutritional counseling and health promotion programs to complement our rehabilitative services.

Physical Therapy

Our physical therapists are committed to providing an optimum level of care and always strive for excellence in practice. They employ exercise and therapeutic strategies to address impairments resulting from orthopedic, neurological or cardiopulmonary disorders, and provide the expertise and motivation necessary to help patients reach their goals.

Occupational Therapy

For those whose ability to function has been impaired by physical injury, disease or disability, our occupational therapists can help to increase or restore the highest level of independence in activities of daily living including feeding, bathing, dressing, homemaking, and social experiences, through specialized activities designed to improve function.

Notably, Waveny Care Center is the first rehabilitation facility in Connecticut to offer advanced rehabilitative therapies using innovative Bioness® technologies on both an inpatient and outpatient basis:

The revolutionary Bioness® NESS H200™ hand device accelerates rehabilitation, intensifies therapy and may help return lost hand function to patients affected by stroke or spinal cord injury.

The discreet Bioness® NESS L300™ leg device assists patients who are affected by Drop Foot as a result of neurological disorders including stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy. In addition to facilitating a more fluid gait, the device may help return lost leg function.

Speech Therapy

Our speech therapists work with patients who have undergone procedures affecting speech and language capabilities or who have impairments due to a neurological disorder, which can affect speech, swallowing and cognition.

Therapeutic Massage

Our massage therapy services provide a holistic approach to overall health and well-being. A therapeutic massage may help to reduce stress, increase flexibility and range of motion, speed recovery from injury or illness and help alleviate pain.

At Waveny, we understand the importance of continuity in care, especially for our short-term patients. Our continuum of care also includes Outpatient Rehabilitation Services at Waveny Care Center so that patients can continue to benefit from the same quality of care and support in achieving their outpatient goals.
